Reuben Cheatem
About the Artist
A lifelong visual artist based in Dallas, Cheatem received his BFA from the University of Kansas with a major in painting and a minor in psychology. His work is primarily figurative (large-scale acrylic portraits where faces dominate the composition) but he employs hard-edged fragmentation and geometric stripes to introduce abstraction, reflecting his belief that Black identity carries an unwavering faith and resilience.
His acclaimed H.E.A.L.E.D. series (Hope, Encouragement, Love Evaded Darkness) comprises 22 paintings documenting his stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy journey, including 12 abstract works each mapping a separate infusion treatment. Shown at the South Dallas Cultural Center and Janette Kennedy Gallery, the series transforms personal suffering into a vibrant, colour-saturated declaration of life after pain.
