Andrea Tosten
About the Artist
An artist, calligrapher, and bookbinder, Tosten's works on paper and installations explore social constructs, binary thinking, and the nature of existence. Referencing her Creole-Jamaican heritage and identity as a Black woman with European and Indigenous roots, she uses letterforms, paper, and sewing to recontextualise her Catholic upbringing and her place in history — drawing equally from Louisiana Voodoo, spiritual practice, and the material culture of the archive.
Tosten holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M and a Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She has exhibited across Texas — from the African American Museum in Dallas to the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and the Galveston Arts Center — and was named runner-up of the inaugural CADD x Maddrey Artist Prize in 2020. She is also known as A.Scribe, reflecting her deep roots in calligraphic and textual practice.
